Welcome to Single Volunteers of DC (SVDC) - a great place to meet new people and help your community at the same time!

Who are SVDC Volunteers?

SVDCer's are an amazing group of dedicated, energetic and caring single professionals from the Metro DC area who are interested in devoting their time and energy to improving the quality of life in their communities through volunteer work.

SVDCer's are also some of the friendliest people in the Metro DC area, creating a large networking circle where there is unlimited potential for friendship, career development and, of course, romance.

What types of activities does SVDC participate?

SVDC only works with non-profit and not-for-profit organizations in activities where a group of people can easily work together. Examples are: beautifying our parks and waterways, march in a parade holding flags or balloons, assemble mailings, help with food distribution and/or preparation, and activities working with children, animals, and mentally and/or physically challenged persons. For a listing of upcoming events, click here.

SVDC also hosts a variety of social events, including a New Years' Eve Bash, Anti-Valentine's Day party and happy hours, to entertain members and provide another outlet to meet and mingle.

SVDC members are also encouraged to create activities, such as hikes or bike rides, theatre, concert or sporting event outings, and museum trips. For a listing of upcoming social events, click here.

How much does membership cost?

Nothing, zero, zip i.e. totally free!

What obligations are there to being a member?

The two primary obligations required of SVDC volunteers is that you only participate if you are single (i.e., available to date someone) and that you meet your commitment of attending all events for which you sign up.

We hope you'll join us in making a difference in the DC area and meeting some wonderful people! If you have any questions, please contact us.

Featured Organization:

Historic Manassas, Inc.

Website: www.visitmanassas.org

Location: 9431 West Street, Manassas, VA 20110

Description: Historic Manassas, Incorporated (HMI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization comprising of an eighteen member Board of Directors. In November 1985, HMI held its first board meeting. In 1988 Manassas was selected to join the Virginia Main Street Program. The historic district receives architectural and marketing advice from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, Division of Historic Resources. No direct funding is received as a result f this affiliation. Old Town Manassas was nominated to the National Register of Historic Places and therefore a twenty percent federal tax credit is available for investors who rehabilitate qualifying structures. The Manassas Main Street Program has received the 2003 Great American Main Street Award, given by the National Trust. HMI also adopted, as its mission statement, a four-point approach of Organization, Promotion, Design, and Economic Restructuring, as recommended by the Virginia Main Street Program. After eighteen years in operation, HMI has coordinated more than sixty design improvements, mostly in the facades of occupied buildings. More than fifteen million dollars have been spent on such efforts. HMI's leadership in community issues exemplifies its commitment to the organization facet of the program. It helps garner support for important issues affecting Old Town Manassas that come before the City Council. HMI acts as a clearinghouse for valuable information and services that retailers and owners can use to improve their businesses and buildings. The organization was formed to promote a positive image of downtown Manassas and to perpetuate its revitalization. They also operate the Visitors Center in Old Town Manassas located in the historic Train Depot. Promotion is perhaps the most active facet of the HMI Program. Some major promotional events sponsored by HMI include the Farmers Market, the Heritage Railway Festival, the 4th of July Celebration, the Annual Fall Jubilee, Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, the Christmas Parade, Merry Old Town, and the Navy Band Concert. These and many other activities bring local residents and visitors downtown and reinforce the identity of the historic area. In addition, these special events are included as downtown development objectives in the Comprehensive Plan for the City of Manassas. HMI also provides a co-op advertising program for the businesses of Old Town which makes it affordable to advertise on television as well as in print media. The design facade program is important in providing visual unity for Old Town to enhance its identity as a place. The historic district is distinctly identified through facade design, new construction design, and signage. HMI works closely with the Beautification Committee and the Manassas Garden Club to plant flowers in the planters on the streets of Old Town. HMI sponsors the banners on the lampposts in Old Town. The most significant contribution of the economic restructuring is the recruitment package for new businesses and the database of available space in the historic district. HMI recruits new business to the historic district, enhances the competitiveness of existing merchants, convents unused space into new uses and conducts ribbon cutting for new businesses. HMI has a contract with the City to operate the Visitor Center, which is open seven days a week. The HMI Visitors Center is a state accredited center. HMI promotes Manassas in the Virginia Is For Lovers magazine, which is the state's promotional piece that reaches out-of-state tourists; through an ad in the AAA Tour book and Southern Living Magazine; and through several other medias such as newspapers, magazines, television, etc. HMI has also recently coordinated a co-op advertising program to promote local business. HMI offers a co-op advertising program to the merchants of Old Town that has been invaluable. The program enables the merchants and opportunity to advertise on television, newspapers, radio and various magazines at a lower rate and receive exposure they otherwise would not find economically feasible. Each of the above-mentioned Four Point Program areas represents a cornerstone of a successful economic revitalization effort and created the solid foundation on which Historic Manassas, Incorporated is built. HMI is an award winning Main Street Program. HMI is the recipient of the prestigious 2001 Society of American Travel Writers Phoenix Awards, which honors individuals and organization for outstanding efforts in conservation, preservation and restoration of travel destinations. HMI has been the recipient of awards from the Virginia Downtown Development Association for the past five years. Most recently, HMI received the award in the category of Promotions for the Heritage Railway Festival. The Heritage Railway Festival has recently been awarded one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society. The Partners of Historic Manassas are members of HMI. Money raised through membership dues is used to support the operations of HMI. As a public/private partnership, HMI depends on the City of Manassas, local citizens and corporations for its existence. The Partners of Historic Manassas have the opportunity to help ensure the economic future of downtown Manassas and to further their own professional affiliations. Each member receives a lapel pin, membership decal and a quarterly newsletter. A variety of functions are held throughout the year providing members a chance to meet others with similar interests in the revitalization of the downtown area.
